Biography — Mark E. Safarik

He is a retired Supervisory Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with twenty-three years of FBI service that included twelve years as a criminal profiler in the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit at the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime, headquartered at the FBI Academy in Quantico.

His operational career covered the analysis and consultation of thousands of national and international violent crime cases — including serial, mass, single and multiple homicides; sexual assault; assault with injury; extortion; false allegation of sexual assault; offender motivation and deterability assessment; and equivocal death analysis. His original research on the sexual assault and homicide of elderly female victims was published in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Physiology from the University of California and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from Boston University.

After retiring from the Bureau, he co-founded Forensic Behavioral Services International, a consultancy that advises law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and defense attorneys on complex violent-crime cases. He is adjunct faculty at Boston College and a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania, and is a member of the Vidocq Society, the Philadelphia-based association of forensic investigators dedicated to solving cold cases. He has trained more than twenty thousand law-enforcement professionals worldwide — chiefs of police, homicide investigators, prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, medical examiners, mental-health professionals and forensic nurses — across multiple continents. His expertise has been featured across CSI: Las Vegas, Bones, Killer Instinct and numerous other television series and documentaries.
